The Yamaha Helm Master™ EX is now the first boat control system in the industry to offer a single-engine compatible system. However, even if you have a twin, triple, quad, or quint-engine, you are going to want to get the Helm Master™ EX installed. It offers the best boat handling and performance on the water. Here’s how it works and what it provides boaters:

Features and Benefits

The Yamaha Helm Master™ EX features fully electric steering (DES) on many boats which eliminates the need for hydraulic fluid and hoses. This boat control system also offers StayPoint™ for holding position using GPS. All Helm Master EX configurations come with single joystick control for 360-degree maneuverability, a huge advantage for boat maneuverability and safety, especially when it comes to docking and close-quarters handling.

Depending on what ‘level’ (or configuration) of a Helm Master™ EX you choose, you’ll have other great features as well. Starting with Level 1, you will get Digital Electric Controls and a compatible display. Level 2 includes Built-in or Bolt on Electric Steering which take steering control to the next level. It has Smooth Control and Precision. Level 3 adds Yamahas Autopilot which helps to navigate to the destination easier and quicker. The final is level 4 which includes a Joystick and Helm Master™ EX Setpoint positioning modes. You’ll gain enhanced joystick controls including, FishPoint™ (for quiet anchoring), DriftPoint™ (for controlled drifting), and Staypoint for maximum control of your vessel.

Operational Details

The Helm Master™ EX integrates with your Yamaha outboard motor (or motors) in a few key ways. For starters, you can select SetPoint™ modes on your Helm Master™ EX joystick to assist with precision maneuvers. Then, you can activate those modes right from your touchscreen display. The joystick can also assist you to ease underway with quick turns or nudges. The autopilot panel then can be used to engage heading or course hold.

Another way the Helm Master™ EX can integrate with Yamaha outboard motors is through the binnacle control. The binnacle can help you set your speed, just like a car’s cruise control. Unlike a car’s cruise control, you can choose whether to set the ‘cruise’ with engine RPM or boat GPS speed!

Compatibility and Installation

If you have a boat with a Yamaha F150 to F450 engine, the Yamaha Helm Master™ EX can be retrofitted onto your boat. However, there are a few considerations you’ll want to keep in mind. If your boat doesn’t have a steering system that’s compatible with the Yamaha Helm Master™ EX Digital Electric Steering System (DES), you’ll likely want to upgrade.

Additionally, installing the Yamaha Helm Master™ EX will mean adding a joystick control, electronic throttle and shift (ETS) modules, and GPS units. While this isn’t a DIY task, it’s something Fish Tale Boats can easily assist you with.
